Breastfeeding – A Mother’s Best Gift

Kairo is almost two weeks old and she has to be the most adorable baby girl in the entire world! I can’t stop looking at her while she is sleeping, which she is doing a lot of at this stage. At the moment life with Kairo is mostly about changing nappies, putting her to sleep and breastfeeding. Which is exactly why this post is about breastfeeding !

When I found out that I was pregnant I was faced with the decision of whether to breastfeed or not. Making the decision to breastfeed a personal matter. I was receiving advice from everywhere which was quite overwhelming.

This was all very new to me so I made a decision to educate myself before making a final decision. I am so grateful for the internet … LOL !!!

I have learnt that babies get everything they need to grow from beastmilk in the first 6 months and they don’t need anything else. Breastmilk provides the ideal nutrition for infants and contains antibodies that help protect your baby against bacteria and viruses. Breastfed babies have a lower risk of developing allergies, have fewer ear infections, a lower risk of having asthma and are just generally more healthy. The health benefits to breastfed babies are endless.

I loved the idea of bonding with my baby while breasfeeding. I was looking forward to the physical closeness, skin- to-skin touching and eye contact with my baby. The fact that I did not have to be concerned about over-feeding her and that she would be more likely to gain the right amount of weight rather than be overweight, was a very comforting thought to me.

I was forced to stop exercising during my pregnancy and really had to make good healthy food choices during this time. I discovered that breastfeeding burns extra calories, and can help you lose your pregnancy weight faster. Breasfeeding may lower your risk of osteoporosis, ovarian and breast cancer.
I would not have to buy formula, which meant we would save money as well. This was a definite plus as I am very conscious about not wasting our hard earned money.

After gathering as much information as possible about the the benefits of breastfeeding for our family, it was clear that here was no other option for us. All I wished for next was to make it a pleasant experience for all of us.

I considered different brands to help me make the breastfeeding experience enjoyable and memorable for our family. I am planning on going back to work soon so I have to express and store my breastmilk and also get my baby comfortable, accepting both the breast and a breastmilk bottle simultaneously. This would also provide special bonding moments for Kiernan and Kairo and an opportunity for us to share the feeding experience.

I was looking for products that would suit our lifestyle and daily routines. Simplicity, comfort, hygiene and a happy family is a priority for me and I was looking for tried and trusted brands in breastfeeding to help me achieve this.

The Pigeon brand of mothercare and baby products and the Lansinoh brand of breasfeeding products appealed to me most.

imagePigeon products from birth through to 3 years of age, have been trusted by families for the past 37 years in South Africa and the Pigeon Corporation in Japan has been in existence for over 55 years. The Pigeon Corporation in Japan, was the first in the world to research how a baby suckles from its mother’s breast, in order to produce a nursing bottle and teat which would automatically respond to baby’s natural suckling reflex action, enabling baby to move between breast and bottle without any nipple confusion. This gives Mom much more freedom in that Dad can also ‘breastfeed’ and if she should have to go to work or need to be away from baby for a period of time, baby can still enjoy the benefits of being breastfed. It also encourages and assists a Mom to maintain her breastfeeding longer.
Pigeon have products to meet the needs of parents from Breastfeeding through to the different stages of Nursing, Weaning and Oral Development. They have it all from their Award Winning Breast Pads to Breast Pumps and Silicone Nipple Shields, a must- have when nipples are too tender for baby to nurse from.

I have their full range of products but my current favourite product from the Pigeon camp, has to be their Disposable Breast Pads Honeycomb

They come with a special absorbent polymer and stay-dry honeycomb lining, to draw excess milk quickly and spreads evenly into the core of the pad, keeping the skin and clothing dry. They maintain form in a smooth shape, even with the heaviest flow and the quilted honeycomb lining provides leak proof coverage. Each pad is individually and hygienically wrapped, which means I can pop them into my handbag and have them readily available when I am on-the-go. No wet breastmilk circles on my clothes … I love them!

The Lansinoh brand carries a super Double Breast Pump, Breastmilk Storage Bags and also the famous Lansinoh Nipple Cream (which I cannot be without). Lansinoh also has Soothing Gel Breast Pads which provides instant cooling relief to sore nipples, as well as a 3-in-1 Therapearl Hot and Cold Breast Therapy, which successfully relieves engorgement, swelling and pain which most moms have to deal with in the early days after birth. All these products are Doctor designed and recommended by Lactation Consultants. Lansinoh also have Clean & Condition Baby Wipes, which contain Lanolin and are ideal for the newborn as it helps put the moisture back into baby’s dry skin as you clean baby all over. These are hypoallergenic and alcohol-free.

In the Lansinoh camp I can’t decide between their HPA Lanolin Nipple Cream and their 2 in 1 Affinity Pro Electric Breast Pump as my current favourite product. The two go hand in hand, so I will tell you about both these amazing products!

Lansinoh HPA Lanolin Nipple Cream has been specially developed to help soothe & protect sore, cracked nipples in breastfeeding mothers. I am so happy that I have found this product. I started using it a few days before my baby was born and continued to use it after every feed. I have not had problems with sore or cracked nipples at all.
Lansinoh uses an ultra purified grade of lanolin, making it the world’s safest, purest lanolin nipple cream. It is completely hypoallergenic, 100% natural and thus free of parabens and any other harmful chemicals. It is also the only lanolin product to have received the British Allergy Foundation Seal of Approval. Safe both for mom and baby, it does not need to be removed prior to breastfeeding. This is a huge plus for me !

My Lansinoh 2 in1 Affinity Pro Electric Breast Pump is my current lifesaver! I started using it in hospital, 2 days after Kairo was born to help stimulate the production of milk and to get her used to feeding from a bottle as soon as possible. It was the best decision ever because I now have a baby who is equally happy whether I offer her the breast or a bottle! I also became comfortable with expressing breastmilk from the word go and now it has just become part of my daily routine. I make an effort to express breastmilk every day, which I keep in Lansinoh Breasmilk storage Bags in the freezer for when I need it . It feels good knowing that I have made the effort to provide breastmilk for my baby and that my milk will be available to her when the time comes for me to leave her in the care of someone else.

The 2 in 1 Affinity Pro can be used as a single or double electric breast pump and has two separate phases to simulate your baby’s natural sucking pattern. Phase 1 provides rapid suction to stimulate the breasts and initiate milk flow. This is then followed by Phase 2 – slower, deeper suction to maximize milk flow. Once on Phase 2, the Expression Phase, the Affinity Pro gives you a choice of the three most effective pumping rhythms designed to simulate natural feeding patterns. Once in your chosen style, you can adjust the suction level to maximize milk production & comfort. The Affinity Pro is effortless to assemble, use and clean, and is as effective as a hospital grade pump.

Congratulations to you and your family.
Breastfeeding is definitely best and even better when you don’t interfere with baby’s virgin gut by introducing solids too early (that ‘start at 4 months’ story? Not true!). We are 16 months in and still going strong on mommy’s milk, water and eating solids.
Treasure every moment as they do grow up very fast.

Wow! Interesting breastfeeding essentials! Now I do realise the importance of a breast pump, it has to be one of the products I get to be ready for my baby.

Congrats! Used Lansinoh and Pigeon products with both my kids (Ages 3 and 1 now) and my youngest is still using a Pigeon bottle and their wipes which are the best on the market 🙂 I give the breast pads and nipple cream to first time moms as a gift and they’re all grateful for the introduction to these amazing products.

    Hey mommy!
It saddens me reading this blog because I had the same plan but I struggled to produce milk. I have tried drinking rooibos, eating healthy even getting meds…

But congratulations again. You doing a great job with kairo
