Sandi Mazibuko is a vivacious, driven and creative businesswoman, who is swiftly making her mark in the cut-throat industry of fashion. Q. How did you get into fashion?
A. I have always loved fashion and wanted to dress differently. When I started traveling I realised that SA is still behind with latest trends.
Q. What made you take fashion more seriously and make a career out of it?
A. I saw the demand for my creations. In 2010 I did trendy world cup dresses with the South African flag colours and added the flag. They became a hit so we did them in the colours of different countries. From there I realised that I can make this into a career, create items I like and share it with world.
Q. How would you describe your design aesthetic?
A. Modern Classic, I love vintage style and yet follow the latest trends, so I always fuse the two.
Q. Are you self taught or did you study fashion design?
A. I can say that I am a self taught because I don’t have any formal qualifications. I started sewing myself and didn’t enjoy that part much either, so I hired a seamstress and now I just design and the team cut and sew.
Q. What is the biggest lesson that you have learned since you started your company?
A. Training your staff about the brand and how to treat customers. As much as we get support from our fellow south Africans, we still get those people that will give you a hard time and expect things they will never expect from big retail stores. They can be demanding so its very important for us to manage that situation wisely.
Q. How do you balance your professional and personal life?
A. I really don’t have much of personal life. I love what I do, its so much fun and yet very stressful. When I need time out I take time out. I make time for family and friends with random visits, lunch/dinner hang outs.
Q. How would you describe your personal style?
A. Classy with a bit of edge.
Q. What is the inspiration behind your Winter Collection?
A. This season we take a contemporary twist on traditional winter essentials. Hues of plum are the must haves this autumn/winter. We move away from “typical” autumn/winter colours and instead highlighting and giving leeway to previously underestimated colours. The trends for this winter collection are extracted from dark feminine purples, blueberry, shades of orchid, eggplant and a burst of warm pinks. It was inspired by The Fabrosanz Women, women of class and elegance. The colour purple represents royalty and that’s what FRS Stands for, Fabulous Royalty Sanz. Every woman is a Queen or a Princess in our eyes and that’s how we want them to feel when wearing FRS.
Q. Which piece is your favorite in the collection?
A. I love our well tailored suits and jumpsuits.
Q. Is the South African fashion industry growing?
A. Yes, it is, the support is overwhelming. We have a lot of ready to wear designers now, which makes locally designed clothes accessible to everyone.
Q. What advice do you have for young designers?
A. Don’t spend too much time looking for someone to help you get to the next level, your work will help you get there. Keep on pushing, work with people who will help advertise your clothes and the right people will soon notice you. We have free social media platform for advertising, use it wisely. Separate business and personal accounts. People don’t want to see your selfies on a business account so be as professional as you want to be treated. Lastly as much as fashion is art, you need to understand it’s a business so get help from people who understand how to run a business and focus on the creative side.
