Kids Living – “The most trendy baby and kids department and online store of South Africa”.
Sandra & Jeroen Hartgers originally from the Netherlands, founded Kids Living in 2008 but what happened before …
In 2006 we, the Hartgers Family; Sandra, Jeroen and our twins Sophie and Philippe (then 4 years old), visited South Africa for the first time. We came for the birth of our first cousin. Jeroen’s brother is married to a South African/Dutch girl and was living in Cape Town already.
We booked a 3-week holiday and planned a round-trip of 10 days along the Garden Route and the rest of our stay we spent in the Cape. While we were here on holiday, we wanted to buy some more gifts for our baby cousin. We visited several baby stores from Cape Town to Port Elisabeth to find the baby things that we had in mind to buy here. We were surprised by the limited range available, the small stores and the lack of a variety of nice, handy, quality products in the baby stores. During our stay, we fell in love with the country and the beautiful and friendly South African people.
On one of the last days of our stay we were having sundowners on the beach. Coming from an entrepreneurial family, we were discussing the type of businesses that could do well in South Africa. One of the conclusions was of course that a good baby store was missing in South Africa.
With Jeroen’s background in several leading positions in retail and sales and coming from an entrepreneurial family and Sandra with roots in the creative industry, a baby and kids retail store had the potential of being a success story. Once back in Holland, Jeroen was determined and decided to start doing surveys and to develop a business plan with risk analysis.
After visiting South Africa again in June 2007, for the physical market survey, we decided to go ahead and applied for a business permit. In March 2008, we received our permits and in April 2008 we moved to Cape Town.
In December 2008, we opened our first store in Northgate Island in Cape Town. The store size was 240 m2 whicht was (and still is) by South African baby specialty store standards, a reasonably big store. Kids Living stayed there until 2014. The 240 m2 became, in our opinion, was far too small for our market so we decided to move to a 800 m2 premises in Green Point, Cape Town. This move meant that we could now show a wider range of products, give more inspiration and be more central and closer to our customers. In the meantime, our online store which we started in 2011, also started to grow.
Our South African suppliers and our Joburg based costumers were asking more and more when we would open in Johannesburg. Now ten years after being in the South African market, we took the step.
Kids Living is the most trendy baby and kids department and online store of South Africa. We are specialised in the delivery of exclusive furniture and original, handy accessories to the whole of South Africa.
